Shelley Manley, Pony School Developer and Instructor
Shelley has been riding horses for 25 years and teaching young riders for over twenty years. She started teaching riding lessons at the age of 14 and taught many dozens of young riders even before graduating from high school. She has a B.S and M.A in Psychology, an M.Ed. in Guidance and Counseling, and has worked as the riding director at a residential children’s home and as a riding instructor at several other facilities. Originally from Houston, TX, she now lives in Martinsburg, WV with her 9 year old daughter and 5 year old son. She is also the School Counselor for Page-Jackson Elementary School in Jefferson County. Ms. Shelley created Pony School in 2012 in response to the growing desires of parents to introduce their young children to horses. She is proud to have designed a program that goes far beyond the traditional pony ride at a zoo or fair, and teaches preschoolers about all aspects of horsemanship. As an instructor for older children, Ms. Shelley specializes in teaching the essentials of balanced seat equitation. She emphasizes safety and control, while helping students learn to kindly communicate with their horses. Students’ personal goals will be taken into account through lessons customized according to their unique skills and abilities. Ms. Shelley encourages students to ask questions and seek horse knowledge through activities outside of lessons as well. Parents are also encouraged to learn alongside their children!
